About Me

Janice Cummings O'Mahony

Janice Cummings O'Mahony was born in San Antonio ,Texas where her father was briefly stationed.  Her mother's family were Oklahoma farmers and her mother was the first in her family to graduate from high school. She then put herself through college working three jobs.  Her father was a first-generation Irish-Catholic from Brooklyn.  He joined the Army Air Corps in WWII and became an officer-navigator in the US Air Force.  They traveled the world and made it through three wars.  With a Master's of Social Work, Janice devoted her professional life in Seattle to social justice and advocacy with expertise in crisis intervention, criminal justice and alleviating the trauma suffered by veterans. She is now claiming the identity of poet, hoping to make every word count.

Janice, 50 years ago, dreaming of being a poet.

Janice, age 19, traveling with English friends through Europe, ready to enter graduate school, get married far too young, and start careening through a life she now tries to understand through poetry.
